Very interesting premise, but there's a lot of build up for little payoff!
The first scene with Hadley and Rawlings was hot, with Hadley finally confessing that his recent run-in with some bad guys was disturbing NOT for how he was treated by the petty criminals, but for what he WANTED to have happened. The barest bit of spoilers here Hadley and Rawlings get one serious dom/sub scene, including handcuffs and anal sex. Then another visit to the playroom wraps things up with barely a whimper and Rawlings confessing his feelings for Hadley. We barely get any dialogue between the two characters, and the falling in love bits happened before the book starts.
Short story, light on the details and fun bits.
This was the first story in the Rawlings Men BDSM series, and for various reason I didn't read it before. Indeed it helps a lot to understand what will be the following development of the series young and submissive blue collar constables, like Joe Hadley, who meet their Masters in older and handsome white collar professionals, like psychiatric Michael Rawlings.
That is the main theme of all the series, the various contrasts blue collar workers against white collar professionals; young men against older gentlemen; law enforcement workers who need to be "mastered", to let the power in someone else hands; professionals who should not let emotions take them who find their soul mate; and on, and on.
As usual the level of deepness of BDSM in the novellas by Kim Dare is on the average side just enough to let you glimpse a complex world, but not too much to scare the more vanilla reader. More than real life commitment (24/7 Master/slave relationship), these BDSM relationships move on a more comfort stage, where yes, people enjoy their games but are not "life" dependant from them.

PROS
- I love reading stories in which a character who's always yearned to be dominant or submissive finally tries it for the first time and discovers that it really is as good as he's always imagined it.
- It's nice to read a story in which the sub doesn't do everything perfectly on his first try. Not only does Hadley struggle to follow orders and remember how he should behave, but he has an all-out panic attack the first time he's restrained. The best part about this, in my opinion, is Rawlings's firm-but-understanding reaction to Hadley's floundering.
- Some of the lines, especially in dialogue, are dry and matter-of-fact in a way that made me smile. Case in point at one point Rawlings says, utterly seriously, "I don't joke about leather."
CONS
- Usually I don't like stories that don't have Happily Ever After endings, but in this case, the story sort of has one and I think it shouldn't. The time frame covered is less than a week, and one of the characters makes a very abrupt confession of love right at the end that is so entirely unfounded that I actually scoffed out loud when I read it. Is one week enough time to fall for someone whom you've been admiring from afar for months? Perhaps. But do I believe in it if I haven't seen any proof of that emotion in the character's thoughts or seen more than a cursory exchange of dialogue? No.
- The main characters are referred to throughout by their last names, which gives the whole story a slightly impersonal feel.
- Dare often uses a descriptor to refer to a character rather than the character's name (that is, "the dominant" or "the doctor" instead of "Rawlings"). I found it very distracting--especially when, for example, Hadley is referred to as "the constable" in the middle of a BDSM scene, when his role as a law enforcement officer isn't exactly at the forefront.
Overall comments This is only the third work I've read by Kim Dare, and I liked the first two much better than this one. Dare does an excellent job with BDSM scenes--the one in-depth bedroom scene is hot--but the story here just didn't measure up for me.
This series is very good. The characters are interesting and will draw you in. It is fun to get to know the Whole family. These books can be read in order or alone.
There are eight novellas in this series, loosely linked by theme and a very kinky family. These are short reads with hot scenes, but they have plots and characterization and are not carbon copies of each other. You wouldn't have to read them in order for them to make sense, but if you do, some of the things supporting characters say have more meaning.

And after I read two of them, I knew I'd be reading them all. Kim Dare delivers her typical happy endings even though these are all stories of BDSM beginnings in a very short format. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
