Jermaine’s older Edwina has always stolen everything from her – from toys to boys. So when her boyfriend Ash calls to tell her that he also fell for Edwina, Jermaine isn’t too surprised. However, in that same call he also tells Jermaine that she needs to come to his brother’s house because Edwina has hurt her back. Knowing her sister well, Jermaine refuses to go because she knows that Edwina is faking it. The reader learn that Edwina is bored of Ash and now attempting to go after Ash’s older brother Lukas, who, naturally, is super handsome and remarkably wealthy. Due to Jermaine’s refusal, Lukas comes to believe that she is a terrible sister who values neither her family nor her duties. He engages in some emotional blackmail by getting Jermaine’s parents involved, and Jermaine ends up having to care for her “wounded” sister. During that time, Lukas comes to discover the real Jermaine and gradually begins to fall for her.Honestly, I bought this book because I had enjoyed the Harlequin comic and, seeing the five star reviews on Amazon, thought that the book would be even better. Complete and utter lie. The writing is so antiquated that I was stunned to learn it was written in September 2001 because it feels as though this is from the 1950s. This made significantly more sense upon learning that the author is in her 80s and was therefore in her 70s when she wrote this. Honestly, I’ve read better fanfiction. The writing itself is dreadful and convoluted. The excessive usage of unnecessary adverbs and adjectives begins to grate after the first 3 chapters. So phrases like this “..and then washed her already-shampooed-that-day hair” are very common. The main character is supposed to be in her mid-twenties, but reads more like a freshman in high school. She’s just so unbearably juvenile. Most of the conversation in the book is Jermaine talking to herself. I don’t know how to adequately describe how terribly those internal conversations flow. To be fair, Lukas is better written but that’s probably because Ms. Steele did not shove his internal conversations on the reader.

Other reviewers have already detailed a lot of the plot, so I won't go into that. Although I have to agree that the sister, Edwina, should have been revealed for the nasty piece of work she is, especially to her father who treats her so favorably over the h, Jermaine.
This was a lovely, more old-time type Harly even though it was written in this century LOL!
Oh, sooooo sexy, in a dreamy kind of way. One of Steele's best! At first our wealthy Brit thinks the gal is self-centered and cold, not coming to take care of her sister (who is faking a back injury to stay in his home). He falls in love anyway, and soon sees the truth.
Loved the sled-riding scene. Me want! And the sizzling scene in her bedroom, when he gave her the Christmas present. Delish!! All HE wants for Christmas is.... ;-)
Jessica Steele is on auto buy for me, even though she only writes Harlequin Romances and some Hqn Presents. She is now about 80 years old, sad to say.
Steele is one of the worst writers, in terms of syntax, grammar, etc. Her sentence construction is ... unusual. But IMO, she is among the best at Hqn in terms of storytelling and sexual tension. Her heroines are virgins, and the wanting drives the heroes nuts. Sometimes, the waiting drives me nuts!
It wasn't so extreme in this book, but in most of Steele's stories, the hero starts off on the wrong foot, thinking the gal did something bad (embezzle, sleep around for wealth, etc). Because of this, the hero is initially contemptuous of the heroine, treating her badly. Steele's heroes endure internal conflict, because they are falling in love with a woman they perceive to lack honor, a shady character! So they blow hot and cold and generally mess it all up. Later, when they realize how wrong they've been, they sweat it out! Sometimes they grovel - I like a good grovel. -)
Very sweet story where the good girl gets her due eventually.
The heroine is saddled with a rotten to the core sister who has stolen numerous boyfriends and happens to be daddy's favorite. Her latest escapade is to steal yet another boyfriend, see his wealthier, older brother, and fake a back injury to put the moves on him. No shame for this creature.
The H strong-arms the h to take care of the evil one who is furious not to have an open playing field.
The hero is smitten and charming, and actually woos the heroine in a backhanded fashion. Other than being way too loyal to her man-stealing sister, the heroine is a breath of fresh air.
I think we can all rub our hands together in glee when (off page) the evil sister gets her comeuppance and finds out that not only is the hero going to marry the heroine, actually can't stand the other sister and has been using her to spend time with the h. It's a small victory, but I'll take it.
If you like angsty, arm twisting heroes and doormat heroines who lay there and take it, walk on by. This is a sweet little romance where good prevails over banal.
